An athlete who was stripped of her Paralympic discus title after a scoring blunder will be allowed to keep her gold medal, organisers said today.
Mariia Pomazan stood proudly on the podium in a packed stadium on the first morning of Paralympic athletics after she was announced the winner of the F35/36 women's discus.
The Ukranian athlete later hailed her win as "extremely emotional'' and an "unforgettable experience".
But her gold medal win dream was dashed as organisers confirmed the placings in the final were incorrect - and relegated her into silver position.
China's Wu Qing was promoted to the gold medal position from second, and her compatriot, Bao Jiongyu, dropped from bronze to fourth.
Australia's Katherine Proudfoot, initially given fifth place, was upgraded to third.
Now, in the latest twist to the medal saga, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) said Pomazan would be allowed to keep her gold - but it would not be added to her country's medal tally.
China's Jiongyu will also be allowed to keep hold of her unofficial bronze.
Craig Spence, the IPC's director of communications, said the decision was made "in the spirit of fair play" as the athletes were competing against the scoreboard.
After originally handing out the medals on Friday, the ceremony for the revised winners was supposed to be held on Saturday before being postponed until today.
