Rovers are assessing their goalkeeping options at Under-23s level – with Joshua Rae thought to be among the options being considered.
The goalkeeper left Leeds United this summer when his contract wasn’t extended, as announced in their retained list.
Rovers are short of options in their goalkeeping department below the first-team, something they are looking to rectify.
Andrew Fisher has been third choice at Rovers for the last two seasons, as well as being a regular for the Under-23s, though did spend part of last season on loan in the National League North with FC United of Manchester.
Fisher, who has three Checkatrade Trophy appearances to his name, is under contract until the summer of 2021 and highly-rated at the club.
Rovers will look to try and secure him a loan move for next season in the EFL, should they recruit a goalkeeper of their own to compete with David Raya and Jayson Leutwiler whose 12-month option was taken up this summer.
Rovers have added to their goalkeeping ranks in the last two seasons with the additions of Aaron Dillon, Charlie Albinson and Oliver Byrne.
Dillon was released in 2018 however, having failed to break in to the Under-23s, while Albinson, a regular last term while Fisher was out on loan, didn’t see his deal extended this summer.
Oliver Byrne, previously with Manchester United and Cardiff before joining Rovers in 2018, was loaned to Stevenage and then joined the League Two side on a permanent deal, only to be released this summer.
With scholar Matthew Campbell released last summer it leaves Under-18s keeper Jordan Eastham, not 18 until September, as next in line to Fisher.
Damien Johnson will be keen to plug that gap with an addition as Rovers prepare for a second successive season in Premier League 2.
Their first pre-season at Clitheroe takes place on July 17 which could see trialists involved.
Rae, aged 18, is formerly of Celtic and Aberdeen, prior to joining Leeds in 2017.
He posted on social media of him training at the club, though Rovers are likely to consider several options before deciding on their next move for the 2019/20 season.
