I KNOW from the relegation battle I experienced during my time at Burnley that the players just have to keep going at the moment.
I wouldn’t like to see it go to the last day, like it did for us against Leyton Orient in 1987, because that is very nerve-wracking for a player.
But, in the situation we’re in at the moment, if that is what happens they will just have to go out in that last game at home to Tottenham and do it.
I have to admit after the home defeat to Wolves on Saturday, it looks like our chances are really slim now.
I was out in Dubai at the weekend playing for Chelsea Old Boys, so I only saw the highlights of the game unfortunately.
I enjoyed the trip to Dubai, although we were all in our 50s in the Chelsea team and a lot of the other teams were 37 or 38.
We played against Franco Baresi and Paolo Di Canio in our game against AC Milan, and people like Jason McAteer, John Wark and Paul Walsh played for Liverpool.
Even Christian Vieri was playing for Inter Milan. I’m told he was on trial at Blackburn last summer, but he looked pretty big.
Going back to the Wolves game, obviously the result wasn’t good and I hear there were some boos when Brian Laws took Chris Eagles off.
Brian has to make decisions and if Chris has not been playing well he has got to make substitutions.
Chris is a good player but he needs to be more consistent.
I hope the fans don’t start being disrespectful to the manager.
It’s not the time to be getting on his back at this stage of the season.
It’s important everyone stays behind Brian, then at the end of the season we can assess things and look at whether we’re in the Premier League or not.
When one or two players are not performing you can pull through but when there are three or four, as there seem to be at the moment, it can affect you.
But no-one can say we haven’t tried our hardest.
No-one expected us to stay up but we’ve given it our best shot.
If we had won the three home games we’ve had recently against Portsmouth, Stoke and Wolves it would have made a big difference.
I think we will need to win a game away from home now and Wigan is a big one now on Saturday.
I wouldn’t imagine we could go to the DW Stadium and defend now.
But hopefully we can win there to reverse what they did to us at Turf Moor earlier in the season.
