CHORLEY missed out on the chance to face Bradford City in the FA Cup first round after Halifax Town old boy James Dean was sent off in a 5-0 defeat in their fourth qualifying round replay at The Shay.
The Magpies were attempting to reach the first round proper for the first time in 24 years and on Monday night they were handed another incentive to beat Conference side Halifax, when the winners of the fourth qualifying round tie were drawn at home to League One side Bradford.
Conference North club Chorley drew 0-0 against Halifax in Saturday’s first meeting of the sides at Victory Park but they suffered a heavy defeat in the replay at the Shay.
The Magpies – backed by 387 travelling supporters in a crowd of 1,681 – actually started the brighter in the replay and had two good chances in the opening stages.
Dean flicked on to put Josh Hine clear on the right-hand side of the area in the third minute, but his low drive was well saved by Halifax keeper Matt Glennon.
Dean, on his first return to The Shay since his days as a popular forward for Halifax, then had a chance himself as he chested the ball down on the edge of the box and turned before firing a volley just wide of the post.
Halifax had their first chance in the 14th minute as Paul Marshall broke clear after Kyle Jacobs’ mistimed intervention, before a last-ditch block from captain Andy Teague halted him in his tracks.
But the ball was not fully cleared and seconds later Marshall’s shot from outside the box was only parried by Chorley’s on-loan Burnley keeper Danijel Nizic and Richard Peniket converted the rebound from 10 yards.
The Magpies were then dealt a major blow three minutes later when Dean was controversially shown a straight red card for violent conduct after a seemingly innocuous off-the-ball tussle with Simon Ainge, which ended with the Halifax man on the floor.
Boss Garry Flitcroft was angry at the decision and Chorley then lost Jacobs to injury. Jake Cottrell came on as a substitute.
Halifax came close to a second when Nizic had to turn Marshall’s free kick around the post on the half-hour mark, although Adam Roscoe almost bagged an equaliser at the other end when his own free kick went inches wide with keeper Glennon motionless.
But the home side did make it 2-0 on the stroke of half time as the ball was crossed in from the right and it broke for Scott Boden to force the ball home.
Halifax then added a third goal only three minutes into the second half as substitute Ross Dyer shrugged off Teague on the byline and pulled the ball back for Adam Smith to drill a low shot under Nizic from 10 yards.
It was 4-0 in the 63rd minute as Smith collected a long crossfield pass and turned Dale Whitham inside out before burying a fierce cross-shot into the top corner.
Chris Simm, introduced as a substitute for his second debut for Chorley, came close to a consolation when his fine shot was tipped wide by Glennon.
Hine then burst through but fired wide from a good position.
Richard Peniket hit the post for Halifax at the other end and Chorley had to play out the final few minutes with only nine men after Roscoe was forced off with a head injury after all three substitutes had been used.
The hosts took advantage to make it 5-0 in the third minute of stoppage time as Peniket beat three defenders and slotted a cool finish beyond Nizic.
