Chorley crashed out of the FA Trophy after an untidy performance which had distinct echoes of last week’s FA Cup exit. The scoreline was exactly the same and playmaker Tom Ince recklessly picked up a second red card. And it was also an afternoon to forget for keeper Jack Cudworth who was at fault for all three Whitby goals.

Cudworth’s troubles began in the 6th minute when he was beaten by a half-hit Steve Snaith shot which crept under his unconvincing dive and just inside the post. Chorley finally hit their stride to equalise with a smart goal on 34 minutes. Ciaran Kilheeney’s quick free kick released John Cunliffe who glided away from a challenge and comfortably beat keeper Nick Liversedge.

Ince and then Kilheeney both had chances to put Chorley ahead before the break. Andy Russell and Steve Foster missed glaring chances after the break.

And they were made to pay as Whitby took the lead on 82 when Snaith struck again after Cudworth failed to punch clear. Ince was sent off for a second booking soon after before Shane Henry sealed the win.
