CHORLEY’S season of strife ended in miserable fashion on Saturday as they were skittled on the last day by Netherfield.
The Windsor Park outfit have finished bottom of the pile as far as the regular clubs are concerned with only the Lancashire Cricket Board Colts, who played just 13 games, below them.
And Chorley’s pain went on into the final day, albeit a brief day’s play at Parkside Road.
Batting first the locals were rolled over for just 40 in 21 overs.
Only opener Jack Catterall offered any steel as he made 22, while Jim Lee was next highest score with nine.
Five Chorley batsmen made ducks as Stuart Nixon claimed 7-20 from 11 overs and Ryan Wilson claimed the other three wickets.
But it was a fitting end to the career of Netherfield stalwart Craig Walmsley, who put away his bat after 21 years at Netherfield.
Walmsley, who made his Netherfield debut in 1990, was sportingly afforded a guard of honour by the Chorley players as he came out to bat at Parkside Road for a final time after announcing his retirement.
The talented left-handed batsman scored over 5,500 Division One runs for the club with a season's best of 814 in 2006.
It was a splendid act of sportsmanship by Andy Holdsworth’s side, especially after they had just been skittled.
Walmsley (9 not out) and Ben Haddrick (30 not out) hurried Netherfield to victory in 6.3 overs.
