BLACKBURN Harriers star Holly Bleasdale insists breaking the pole vault world record is not her top priority in 2012 as she bids to defend her title at this weekend’s Aviva UK Indoor Trials and Championships.

The 20-year-old is arguably Britain’s in-form athlete heading into the sold-out event at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport facility after a stunning last few weeks.

She topped the world rankings in January after breaking her own UK record with a jump of 4.87m in France and, on Wednesday, was edged out on countback by world indoor record holder Yelena Isinbayeva in Poland.

Defending her British title, Bleasdale is expected to dominate her national rivals at Sheffield and, in front of an expectant crowd, will be determined to produce another huge leap.

Smashing the world record of exactly five meters, set by Isinbayeva, is a goal that Bleasdale would love to achieve at some point.

But with the World Indoor Championships in Turkey in March, following next week’s AVIVA Grand Prix at Birmingham, and the Olympic Games on the horizon this summer, Bleasdale is only determined on winning events and maintain a high-quality level of consistency.

“For me, this year is not about jumping massive heights. I think that will come a couple of years down the line when I’m more consistent and stronger,” said Bleasdale.

“It is about jumping above 4.70m and 4.80m every time I go out in competitions and showing everybody that I’m consistent and that if I go to a championships, I can produce a jump that is above 4.70m.

“The majority of the time, that will probably win me a medal.

“Getting more consistency and experience of clearing 4.70m is what (coach) Julien Raffalli wants from me.

“But Julien said he wants me to win these competitions leading up to the World Indoors.”
