Candice Leah of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers was the winning woman at the Pendleton Fell Race, coming home over seven minutes clear of unattached runner Ellen Jeanes.

Candice clocked 41:08 for the five miles with 1500 feet of climb while Jackie Shaw of Darwen Dashers took third in 50:37.

Hopes that the course record, which has stood since 1983, might fall were given a boost by the presence of Andy Peace, but although the Bingley man won ahead of defending champion Darren Kay and former winner Andy Wrench, the time of 33:08 was two and a half minutes out.

The course has never changed in over 30 years, but according to organiser Roger Dewhurst it is more overgrown in places.

Wrench took the veteran title for Todmorden in 35:36 from Clayton Harriers Ian Greenwood and Alan Life, while Paul Thompson of Clayton was fifth outright ahead of Rossendale's Brendon Taylor.

Ken Taylor of Rossendale and Linda Lord from Clayton were the over 50 winners.
