SOPHIE Hitchon has been nominated for the European Athletics Rising Star Awards for 2010 following her wonderful victory in the women’s hammer at the World Junior Championships back in July.
The 19-year old Blackburn Harrier, who was also the Great Britain women’s captain at the Games in Moncton, Canada, broke her own UK U20 record to snatch the gold medal on her final throw with 66.01m.
Sophie, who started her career at Pendle Athletic Club, is one of 12 nominees for the women’s award which also include fellow Brit Jodie Williams, the 16-year old who won gold and silver in the 100m and 200m in Moncton.
They are aiming to emulate Jessica Ennis and Steph Twell who won in 2007 and 2008.
The winners, along with the winners of the European Athlete of the Year Awards will be invited to receive their awards during the European Athletics Convention in Belgrade, Serbia on Saturday October 16.
