Alison Leonard and Eleanor Markendale hit the top of the national ranking lists as they set championship records at the Lancashire County Track and Field Championships.

The two-day event at Blackpool's Stanley Park Arena was far from ideal for high class performances with cold and windy conditions on Saturday being replaced by a wet Sunday, and yet eight East Lancashire athletes set new records.

Blackburn Harriers Ben Fish and Sarah Willimott broke the senior 5,000 metre marks with respective times of 14:35.8 and 16:54.0, with Willimott smashing her personal best by 50 seconds.

In Blackburn's best ever showing at the championships, Paul Whittle set a club record 16.2 seconds in the under 20s 110m hurdles and Chris Hart, Beckie McElroy and Claude Peter-Thomas each won two gold medals.

Meanwhile, under 13 Riannon Colquhoun produced an astonishing performance in the 70m hurdles to win gold in her first competition as a club runner.

Chorley Harrier Leonard has trained at Blackburn for the past two years and won two gold medals, further lowering her best time in the 800m to eclipse her outing at the BMC meeting on May Day.

Her performance led her to be selected to run for Great Britain under 20s this weekend at Loughborough in the 800m.

Her time of 2:08.7 in driving rain leaves her top of both the under 17 and under 20 rankings and knocked four seconds off Laura Finucane's championship record.

Hyndburn AC and Rossendale Harriers are two clubs on an upswing and both made new entries into the record books.

Michael Aspden set his in the under 15s 400m with 55.8 seconds as Hyndburn took a 24 medal haul, 17 of them from the women.

Dale's Dominic Walton clocked 2:20.4 in the under 13s 800m to erase Curt Pearce's old mark.

Burnley fielded a small but competitive team with Abigail Ewart setting a record 37.98m in the under 20 hammer, and Danielle Walker winning the middle distance double of 800m and 1500m also in the under 20s.

Eleanor Markendale had the usual hectic weekend of a heptathlete, and left Blackpool clutching five medals including two golds.

The under 17 Pendle star was a favourite for the long jump and duly won with 60 centimetres in hand, but she sprung a minor surprise in the 300 metres hurdles where her time of 44.1 seconds set a new championship best.

Club officials believe it makes her number one in the country.

In the same age group Stacey Cook struck gold in the shot and discus as the club racked up 13 medals in the throws.
