The combined Burnley and Pendle team had its first outing in the Northern Track and Field League, and both clubs gave the decision to join forces a big thumbs-up as they won their Division 3WC fixture at Cleckheaton.

The team scored 390 points with Holmfirth Harriers second on 368 in a close contest between the leading four of the six clubs taking part.

There were 19 A string victories and seven B string, and in six of the events they scored a maximum with A and B wins. David Thornton who represents Pendle and Danielle Walker from Burnley each won A string doubles in the 800m and 1500m.

Rossendale Harriers were also back to winning ways after their shock relegation to Division 4WC last year. Appearing at Leeds, Gavin Barker was their star with three A string victories in the shot, hammer and discus. Stalwarts Anthony Gotts and Heather Corbishley made useful contributions and Heather's mum Dianne made a surprise appearance with her first ever race in the 3,000m.

Despite having a small team on duty, Hyndburn came fourth in the same fixture. Caroline Smithson won the A string 100m, 200m, long jump and high jump while Vikki Grime and Claire Mitchell took the A hammer and A javelin. Stephen Sumner won the A 200m for the men as Mike Grime, Phil Sumner, Matthew Carabine and Lauren Grime accumulated handy points.
