The National Sportshall Athletics Final at Birmingham awaits the Lancashire Under 15 Girls Team after they won the North West Regional Final at Wigan.

Jubilant coach Paul Brooke described the match as "one of the toughest inter-counties regional rounds" but the girls triumphed against teams from Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire.

Sophie Hitchen of Pendle Athletic Club and Rebecca Hodkinson from Holy Cross School in Chorley were members of the winning team which also included Preston Harriers Rebekah Ingham, Lucy Sumner, Harriet James and Katrina Hall.

Sophie and Rebecca won gold and bronze in the shot as the team claimed seven medals and a total of 634 points.

The three other Lancashire teams representing the under 13 girls and boys and the under 15 boys each finished in third place.

Pendle's Sadie Cook, Blackburn's Bracken Sturgess and Amber Bateman, and Lucy Hankin from Holy Cross contributed towards the 598 points accumulated by the under 13 girls.

Reece Phillips of Rossendale, Reece Holland from Holy Cross, Hyndburn's Shaun Conboy and Ryan Hurley, representing Blackburn Harriers, helped the under 13 boys to 595 points while the under 15 boys made up entirely of athletes from Preston and Blackpool scored 555 points.

Following their successes at Wigan on February 12, the athletes were back on duty last Sunday for the final Lancashire Sportshall League fixture of the winter at Blackpool.

As usual, sheer weight of numbers ensured that Preston and Blackpool were first and second while the Chorley Athletic Club took third on the day from Hyndburn, Blackburn Harriers and Pendle.

Preston won all three fixtures to become League Champions ahead of Blackpool with Blackburn Harriers third. Pendle took fourth with Chorley AC tied with Hyndburn for fifth. Holy Cross and Rossendale Harriers completed the field.

Two local contenders won coveted Athlete of the Match Awards with Lucy Chadwick of Pendle starring for the under 11 girls and Reece Holland of Holy Cross for the under 13 boys.

Lucy scored 21 points including seven for winning the four lap race in 56.6 seconds.

Blackburn Harriers had 15 entries in this youngest age group which augers well for the future.
