Blackburn Harriers scored a winning double at the David Staff Memorial Fell Race with Ben Fish and Beckie Taylor, but the biggest winners will be the Cardiac Risk in the Young or CRY charity which will benefit by the £550 the race raised.

Darwen Dashers stage the event annually to keep alive the memory of club member David who collapsed during a road race 15 years ago, and the money will help to prevent similar tragedies.

Since breaking the course record 12 months ago, Darwen-based Fish has won England honours at the Toronto Waterfront marathon, and his pedigree once again showed as he won the 5.1 miler from Sunnyhurst Woods to the Jubilee Tower and back with nearly three minutes in hand over Colin Bishop.

His own record just eluded him by 16 seconds as he took 31:45 and his club was the leading team, though there were no team prizes on offer, with Josh Tighe third and Lee Passco fifth.

Last week’s Tour of Pendle winner, Chorley Harrier, Dominic Raby took fourth with another distance man Paul Thompson placing sixth for Clayton-le-Moors.

Two more locals battled it out for over 50 honours with Rossendale’s Phil Taylor just getting the better of last year’s champion Graham Schofield, Clayton’s Jack Dugdale was the first junior, and there was a popular home win for the Dashers’ Don Ashton in the over 70s.

Meanwhile, England Junior International Taylor was too good for the opposition – and for mum and dad Jackie and Richard – even though she raced in the cross country at Liverpool the day before.

Taylor clocked 41:59 with Jackie fifth in 45:58 but the lack of a third counter meant that Chorley Harriers were easily the top team.

Jackie Redmayne improved by a place this year to be second with Dawn Atkins third and Natasha Fellowes sixth while Karen Taylor emulated husband Phil by winning the over 50 prize for Dale.
