Lauren Westwell of Ribble Valley Athletic Club has won the coveted Athlete of the Match Award in the U13 girls’ division at the first Lancashire Sportshall League Meeting of the winter season.

Lauren won the two lap race in 24.4 seconds, the four lap in 52.4 secs, and was second in the speed jump and third in the long jump.

All three meetings this season are at Stanley Park in Blackpool, and there were ten teams involved including five from our side of the county.

Regulars Blackburn Harriers, Pendle, Ribble Valley and Westholme School have been joined now by Darwen Aldridge Community College thanks to the initiative of teacher Hayley Billington who is a Preston Harrier herself. Their best result was in the U13 boys’ category where they headed the East Lancashire challenge with third.

Oliver Harkness was their star turn with second in the triple jump and third in the shot.

The U11s have had to grapple with some new events this season – the target draw, the chest push and the high stepper, and it is important that they master them early as there is a regional match at Sport City, Manchester on Sunday November 23 for this youngest age group. The Lancashire team is currently being finalised and we will announce it next week.
