Eleanor Markendale and Ryan Inglis were the big winners at Pendle Athletic Club’s Annual Presentation Night, which was held last Friday at Nelson Cricket Club.

The club’s special guest was hammer thrower Sophie Hitchon, fresh from her splendid victory at the Commonwealth Youth Games at Pune, India.

Sophie, who started her career at Pendle before moving to Blackburn Harriers, took along her gold medal to show her former club mates.

Also among the guests was the North West Regional Manager for England Athletics, Andy Lee, who presented the club with its certificate for achieving the Club Mark.

Ryan was the choice of his peers as the Athletes’ Athlete, voted for by everyone from the U15 age group and above.

The trophy is in memory of Raymond Wild, who was an athlete, coach and official for the club. Inglis won the Male Throws Trophy as well for the third year in succession after winning the silver medal in the shot and the bronze in the discus and javelin at the Lancashire Championships, and adding the silver in the shot at the Lancashire Schools’ Championships.

Eleanor is the Rotary Club Young Athlete of the Year. She is the North West Schools’ heptathlon champion and was third in the English Schools’ Championships.

She added the silver in the Northern Championships and was fourth in the England Athletics Championships.

Eleanor was the women’s captain of the first North of England U20 Team to travel abroad and has won England and Great Britain honours during the summer.

Jack Thompson won his first England vest after finishing joint third in the English U18 Fell Championship.

He was runner up in the BOFRA series and the Lancashire U18 Champion to win his club’s Male Fell award.

Lucy Chadwick was the Female Throws prize-winner following her victories in the Lancashire Championships at shot and hammer, backed by another gold medal in the shot at the Lancashire Schools’ Championships.
