Oliver Aspden, Joe Basquill, Holly Broughton and Hayley Huntoon won medals at the Northern Indoor Championships last weekend.

It was the turn of the under 15 and under 17 athletes, after the U20 and senior competition a week before on the same Sheffield track.

Ribble Valley Athletic Club targeted the competition with no fewer than 17 making the trip across the Pennines, and although most were there for the experience more than the quest for medals, personal best performances abounded.

The U17 Men's 800m was very keenly contested with three heats required to sort out the finalists, and Joe Basquill excelled with an indoor PB of 2:00.21 to claim the bronze. Ian Yates also made the final after a best of 2:01.34 in his heat.

In the same age group, Luke Kimberley narrowly missed a place in the 400m final despite finishing second in the heat, but there was better fortune for Hayley Huntoon who struck bronze in the U17 women's 1500m.

The first two in this race still gave the spectators a good contest with Holly Broughton of Blackburn Harriers returning 5:08.5 for a well deserved silver medal.

Blackburn had two finalists in the U17 women's 60m hurdles after Holly Bleasdale and Abby-Leigh Edmundson successfully negotiated their heats.

They took fifth and sixth in 9.30 secs and 9.34 secs with Bleasdale just having the edge.

In the U15 age group, the Harriers' Dominic Walton qualified for the final of the 800m with 2:16.08, but Naomi Thompson's luck was out in her 800m race as third in her heat was insufficient to progress.

Oliver Aspden did win a second silver medal for the Blackburn club though after clocking 9.19 seconds in the U15 boys' 60m hurdles.
