Eleanor Markendale has been chosen to represent England U20s in the Home Countries International Combined Events Match at Stoke this weekend.

The Clitheroe Royal Grammar School student will contest the heptathon over two days.

It will be her England debut, and it will complete her set, having already represented both Great Britain and England Schools.

Meanwhile, another of Pendle Athletic Club's young stars, Sophie Hitchon, continued her excellent form in the hammer throw at the U20s Inter Regional Match at Copthall, Hendon.

The 16-year old, representing the North of England, won the competition with 54.26 metres, just shy of her U17 UK Record of 54.56m set a week earlier.

While Hitchon was basking in the sun at Hendon, her Club's Open Medal Meeting took place at Seedhill in a downpour with standing water having to be brushed from the track.

Nevertheless, the meeting continued uninterrupted thanks to some sterling work from the hosts, and there were five meeting records set including three from East Lancashire athletes.

Katie Ireland of Rossendale Harriers set hers with 5:03.9 in the senior 1500m, Chorley AC's Kelly Hilton took the senior triple jump with 11.13 metres, and Abby-Leigh Edmundson clocked 47.6 seconds in the U17s 300m hurdles for Blackburn Harriers.

For the host club, Lucy Chadwick set a Grade 1 Standard 8.65m in the U13s shot, and there were G3s for Stephen Sumner and Katy McKenna, both Hyndburn, in the senior 100m and U15s shot, Blackburn's Anthony Hauserman in the U15s 800m, and Helena Leathley of Pendle who featured in the U13s high jump.

All these athletes were gold medal winners.
