BLACKBURN Harriers athlete Matthew Lalor finished in second place in Sunday’s Accrington 10k.

Jon Fletcher, of Border Harriers, was the winner of the race in 34 minutes 52 seconds with Lalor taking the runner up position in 35 minutes 6 seconds.

Blackburn Harriers team-mate Brian Fogarty, who is the cousin of former world Superbike champion Carl Fogarty and recently competed in the World Ironman Championships in Hawaii, finished fifth in 36:24.

Another Blackburn Harriers runner, Paul Guinan was seventh overall and third in the over 40s section in 36mins 32secs.

Nick Gaskell, of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers, was eighth overall and fourth in the over 40s in 36mins 53secs.

Tom Brewster was ninth in 37min 10secs and another Clayton athlete, Phil Hall, was 10th overall and first across the line in the over 50s category in 37:35.

Rossendale Harriers’ Alan Lundberg-Bury was 16th overall and second in the over 50s section in 39mins 29secs, while Darwen Dashers’ Paul Brindle was 17th overall and seventh in the over 40s category in 39mins 33secs.

Trawden’s David Lord finished 18th overall and third in the over 50s in 39mins 37secs – 26 seconds ahead of clubmate James Harris, who was 21st.

Blackburn Harriers’ Evan Cook was the first over 60s finisher and was 27th overall in 40:38, while Clayton trio Richard Briscoe, Leon Passco and Lee Passco were 28th, 29th and 30th. Leon Passco was also the first under 19s runner to finish.

Blackburn Road Runners’ Martni Kerry was fifth in the over 50s section, while Clayton’s Stephen Biscomb was third in the over 60s.

Blackburn Harriers’ Stuart Furness was second in the over 65s section, while former Olympic distance runner Ron Hill was the first over 75s runner – crossing the line in 177th position overall in 56:18.

Hill recently turned 75 - having raced at the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games as well as winning marathon gold at the 1970 Commonwealth Games – and was competing for Clayton-le-Moors Harriers.
