BURNLEY’S hammer thrower Sophie Hitchon is ready for the biggest day of her life as she realises her Olympic dream.
The Blackburn Harrier, from Burnley, competes in the hammer final in the Olympic stadium this evening and she admits she is just relishing the experience.
The 21-year-old achieved her goal of reaching the final by smashing her own British record with her final throw in qualifying.
It had looked as though she was heading out of the competition after her first two events, but she held her nerve admirably.
Now, knowing it would take a monumental throw to reach the podium, Hitchon insists anything else is just a bonus now.
Together with Harriers team mate pole vaulter Holly Bleasdale, Hitchon represents a hugely promising future for Britain in field events and maintains the experience at London 2012 will always be more important than the results.
She said “I think in hindsight we have all done really well. We are all very young and we still have a lot of time ahead of us and we have at least ten years all three of us.
“I think just to be a part of the Games and Team GB no-one let themselves down even if they are disappointed in the result.
“I think we still have so long ahead of us and hopefully in years to come we will be able to produce our bests in finals. I just want to do my best and if I can throw another PB it would be amazing and that’s all I can ask for.”
