BURNLEY’S Holly Lam-Moores insists the best is yet to come after she wrote her name into the history books at London 2012 on Saturday.
The 21-year-old was already making history just by taking to the capital’s Handball Arena court – part of the first-ever women’s Great Britain team to play at an Olympics.
But as debuts go Lam-Moores and co couldn’t have asked for a much tougher one, taking on medal favourites Montenegro, who are able to boast world number one Bojana Popovic in their ranks.
And although it proved to be just as tough as first feared – Great Britain going down 31-19 – Lam-Moores is adamant the team can hold their head up high ahead of their final four group matches.
“We had a really good start and then the last ten and 15 minutes we let it slip and their experience showed at the end there,” she said.
“It was the first time we have ever played in front of a crowd this big that is fully supporting us so that was a first for us and a first for the nation.
“It would always be very tough to get to the quarter-finals but we can’t just come into the Olympics and settle for second best, we have to go all out.
“But we proved that we can compete with the best nations as Montenegro is and we proved we can compete with them so I think it is realistic that we can progress.
“There are plenty of positives to take away. In spells there we were really competitive with them so we have to take them forward – we had to start somewhere and this is just the beginning for us.
“I was so proud because I had never seen British handball fans before and now I have, it was a first for me.”
Meanwhile, Burnley goalkeeper Rachel Brown was an unused substitute as Great Britain’s women’s football team comfortably saw off the challenge of Cameroon, running out 3-0 winners at the Millennium Stadium.
Goals from Casey Stoner, Jill Scott and Stephanie Houghton earned them a second-straight victory after seeing off the challenge of New Zealand in their opener, leaving head Coach Hope Powell to toast a job well done.
Powell said: “We are happy to win the game.
“They were very physical and quick, but we were disciplined and we executed the three goals well.
“We could have had more but I’m very satisfied with the result.”
