BLACKBURN Harriers’ Olympic girl Sophie Hitchon will look to complete a sensational eight days when she takes to the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki tomorrow.
The 20-year-old Burnley-born hammer star booked her ticket to London 2012 last Saturday when she launched a best throw of 69.79m at the Aviva Trials in Birmingham.
Proving she is by far the best on British shores, Hitchon, who celebrates her 21st birthday on July 11, is now putting her talent to the test against the continent’s elite hammer throwers in Finland.
She gets her Euro campaign underway tomorrow morning in the first of two qualifying groups, and will be desperate to reach Sunday evening’s final.
Fellow Harrier, Chorley pole vaulter Holly Bleasdale, will not be competing in Helsinki as she takes a break from competitive action.
Bleasdale, 20, also confirmed her spot GB place for the Olympic Games by breaking her own UK record last Sunday with a leap of 4.71m.
