TERRY Gornell admits he made the right decision when he chose to leave Accrington Stanley last summer.

Gornell returned to the Crown Ground to score for Shrewsbury on Saturday and is likely to seal automatic promotion to League One this weekend.

The striker will take extra satisfaction from that achievement after missing out in the play-offs with Stanley last season, after which he took the difficult decision to leave the Reds at the end of his contract – joining Shrews-bury after also holding talks with Inverness.

Stanley are currently 12th in League Two after Cook took over from the departed John Coleman.

“It was tough in the summer, it was a big decision,” said the 22-year-old. “I was out of contract and it was tough leaving, I enjoyed playing at Accrington.

“But looking at it from my point of view and a professional point of view it was the right thing to do and I’m sure everyone would agree now."

The Reds squad is much changed from the one that Gornell was a key part of last term, but he said: “I thought they were going to do it again this year at one stage of the season. Hopefully they’ll do well next season.”
