STEVE Kean has called for his Blackburn Rovers players to “set the tone” at Ewood Park this afternoon - after insisting it is their responsibility to get the fans ‘raising the roof’.
The Rovers boss is unconcerned by plans from sections of supporters to march against him and Venky’s regime before today’s game, claiming the fans will respond to displays on the field.
Rovers entertain Norwich this afternoon three points from safety and knowing a win is crucial if they are to stand any chance of salvaging their top flight status.
Kean said: “I don’t think we have to aim anything but positivity towards our fans. It is our responsibility to set the tone and not theirs.
“We have to take the responsibility and the mantle ourselves, the players, and the management. We have to give them something to shout about.
“I don’t think we can just turn up to the game and say ‘get behind us’. We have got to show them that we know what this game means, that we are going to be out of the blocks and trying to get the points and getting the fans excited about the play.
“We have to give the fans something to shout about from the first minute. There have been times when we have been slow and then obviously that creates an anxious feeling around the ground.”
Wigan’s recent revival has made life even more difficult for Rovers, with wins over Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal moving them out of the drop zone.
Their run has coincided with Kean’s men losing five straight matches, having previously been six points clear of the drop zone, but the Rovers boss is adamant things can turn again.
He said: “We got the players back on the training ground and are trying to put them in the mindset that any team can have a bad run. It doesn’t make them bad players over night.
“We have gone to Old Trafford, Anfield and Goodison and dug out results. Just because we have got a few bad results recently does not mean we have become a bad team.
“We have to get back to thinking what we did to Norwich in the first game we must do again, where we should have been worthy winers.
“We need to get back doing what we do well. We get it up to the front, we can pass it quickly, we can get it to the wide areas very quickly.
“Other teams have picked up wins. Wigan have put together a very good run and probably should have had more points. That shows what can happen.
“You can get a result and that puts you on the front foot and you can go on an unbeaten run. So I take my hat off to Wigan, their players and staff.
“The teams that you talk about with Wigan we have also got results against. We beat Arsenal and United and drew with Liverpool. So we don’t have to use Wigan as inspiration we just have to look at ourselves having gone to these places and got results.
“In the remaining games if we go back to what we are good at there is no reason why we can’t go on a run ourselves.”
With Yakubu and Junior Hoilett passed fit and Martin Olsson expected to make the clash, Kean is hopeful Rovers can give their fans something to cheer.
Kean said: “The players are not tense. There has been a good togetherness, not an edgy atmosphere. They are enjoying the hard work. It has not been nervous, it was positive all week.
“We have to get the spark early and make things happen.Demonstration or no demonstration it is our responsibility to get the fans going and happy by the way we have started the game.
“We don’t know how many points we need, that changes all the time. We have to pick up points from every single game and there is no reason why we can’t do that.
“White Hart Lane and Stamford Bridge are tough but so are Anfield and Old Trafford and we got results there.
“If I had to write a book of the number of things that have gone on here this season you would say that is impossible, that couldn’t have happened.
“When these things happen again it means I am in a better position to deal with them. I would always like to think I have a good relationship with the players and the ones that have left. “
