BLACKBURN Rovers duo Junior Hoilett and Yakubu are winning their fitness battle ahead of Saturday’s crucial Premier League visit of Norwich City.
Fears were raised over their involvement at Ewood Park having been withdrawn due to injury in the second half of last weekend’s dire defeat in Swansea, but both are now expected to be fit.
Yakubu was complaining of a knee injury and Junior Hoilett suffered a slight hamstring niggle, with boss Steve Kean quickly replacing them for fear of aggravating the injuries.
Both took part in first team training yesterday though and, as long as they suffer no adverse reaction, are expected to start Rovers’ must-win clash against Norwich City.
The duo have been key players for Rovers this campaign with Yakubu scoring 17 goals already this season after signing from Everton in the summer.
Contract rebel Junior Hoilett has contributed six goals this campaign and, despite his Ewood future looking uncertain, is looked upon as the man most likely to help save Rovers’ season.
Gael Givet has also participated in first team training this week, raising hopes he will be recalled to the squad this weekend.
Givet was not involved against Swansea, after being deemed by Kean as not being in the right frame of mind, after a row is believed to have been erupted between the pair at the end of last week.
Givet though quickly dismissed reports that he refused to play for the club and is hoping he can play a part in Rovers’ last four games of the season.
The Frenchman has trained with the first team squad on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday - with Wednesday being their day off - leaving Kean the final decision on his involvement.
Givet’s inclusion is increasingly important this weekend with Grant Hanley’s ankle ligament injury leaving Rovers with just Givet and Scott Dann as fit centre backs.
Rovers are currently three points adrift of Premier League safety with just four games of the campaign left.
With Spurs and Chelsea still to play away from home and a visit of in form Wigan to come, Steve Kean’s men know a win on Saturday is crucial if they are to pull of a Premier League escape.
