STEVE Kean believes his Blackburn Rovers side still need at least seven points to salvage their Premier League status – after admitting “we must win our next game”.

Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Swansea City leaves Rovers still three points adrift of safety with just four matches left, and games in hand for some of their rivals, with boss Kean conceding there is little margin for error.

Rovers entertain Norwich next weekend, before a trip to Spurs, a crunch home game against Wigan and a final day visit to Chelsea.

Kean admits it is a daunting challenge ahead but remains defiant his players can defy the odds and remain in the top flight.

Kean said: “We are all upset. You don’t come to an away ground and try to lose. I said to the lads in there if we can go to Anfield and Goodison and draw and Old Trafford and win, there is no reason why we can’t go to White Hart Lane and Chelsea and get something. It is the same group of players.

“I think confidence is a mindset. People will say you get on a good run and that breeds confidence. But you can breed confidence by looking at what you have done before.

“We are not going to be able to invent 10 games where we can go on an unbeaten run because there are not enough games left. We have to look at what we done well against Norwich and get out of the position we are in.

“We have to win the next game because I think we need two wins and a draw. That is the minimum requirement.”

First half strikes from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Nathan Dyer and a second half Scott Dann own goal were enough to see Rovers off on Saturday afternoon.

After an even opening half an hour, in which neither side produced, Kean admits Swansea worked out their game plan.

He said: “Initially we intended to set up as we did against Swansea at Ewood Park, which was to let one of their centre halves have the ball play it into midfield and basically set a trap, said Kean.

“We did that in the early part of the game before they scored and I thought we did that very well. The problem we had was once we gained possession, our passing was a little bit loose.

“I am angry because I feel we are very good at 0-0. If everything is going our way, or we score first then it is not a problem.

“The difference between the game here and the game at Ewood was when we did win it our passing was loose. Credit to Swansea they put pressure on us and probably learned from the way we counter attacked against them at Ewood.

“That was a big factor in the game that we were unable to be as accurate in our passing as the previous match. Obviously the combination of injuries made it difficult as well.”
