EDDIE Howe celebrated a ‘top ten’ after Burnley reached double figures for away wins in the Championship this season.
But the Clarets manager remains frustrated that his side have not been more of a hit this year.
The gap to the play-offs has shrunk to six points thanks to a nine-point return from their last four games. Their 10th away win came courtesy of Josh McQuoid’s first for the club – the 100th goal scored under Howe in all competitions – and Charlie Austin’s 75th minute penalty, after Chris Brown equalised 11 minutes into the second half.
But with just four fixtures remaining, Burnley’s positive run seems to have come too late to revive their play-off ambitions.
“Ten away wins is a great achievement for us, we’re pleased but a little bit frustrated. Our home form hasn’t been what it should be,” said Howe.
“We’re still kicking ourselves over certain games that we threw away and lost leads in, and those points are crucial.
“It’s still so tight and we’re a few points off it.
“We’ll give it everything,” added the Burnley boss, who praised his injury-hit troops.
“You can see the lads putting their bodies on the line for the club.
“They’ve been magnificent.”
After taking a 1-0 lead into the half-time break, Howe admitted he urged his players not to make the same mistakes as last months’ trip to Watford, where they slipped to a 3-2 defeat after leading 2-0 early in the second half.
“I said at half-time - let’s learn from Watford,” said Howe, who gave a late debut to youth team striker Shay McCartan.
“We were cruising to victory and chucked it away.
“Then Doncaster scored out of nothing and it was a big test for us.
“Thankfully we responded really well, got a second wind and deserved the win.
“We worked their goalkeeper and our build-up play was very good, some of the best it’s been all season.
“Junior Stanislas was outstanding in the first half - probably his best performance for us - and Josh McQuoid scored a great goal.
“I’m really pleased for him, he deserved that for his all-round contribution - and I’m pleased to see Charlie score again.”
