HAT-TRICK hero Charlie Austin netted his 49, 50th and 51st career goals as Burnley ended a seven-game winless run in emphatic fashion.

The Clarets could count themselves fortunate to go in level at the break, after Kieran Trippier's opening goal from a corner was quickly cancelled out by David Norris, and relegation-threatened Portsmouth went on to dominate from there.

But the Clarets came out fighting in the second half and restored their lead with a Danny Ings' header from David Edgar's cross two minutes after the re-start.

Austin came on when Martin Paterson took a knock in the 52nd minute, and scored his first of three goals in the 74th.

The ball hit the striker after Ross Wallace sent a delivery into the box from the left and fellow substitute Josh McQuoid missed the header. But the striker was quick to react to the rebound to prod home and give Burnley a two-goal cushion.

Austin doubled his tally for the afternoon, reaching a half-century of career goals, with the first of two stoppage-time goals after pouncing on Jason Pearce's loose backpass and rounding goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown to slot into an empty net.

The former Swindon hot-shot completed a career-first hat-trick, and 5-1 win for the Clarets, at the end of a quick break.
