STEVE Kean insists there is no point in trying to play Premier League guessing games as he predicts the survival scrap will remain as unpredictable as ever.

Blackburn Rovers entertain Premier League champions Manchester United on Monday night currently just three points clear of the drop zone – knowing the weekend’s results could send them back into the bottom three.

Kean though isn’t about to start trying to predict the results of Rovers’ relegation rivals after insisting the only sure fire way to secure top flight safety is by looking after themselves.

Rovers are looking to complete the double over league leaders United, having stunned them at Old Trafford in December, and Kean insists the challenge ahead does not daunt them.

Kean said: “It is a tough one but we have had a positive result against them earlier in the season and played very well and there is no reason why we can't equip ourselves well and get back to what we have been doing in recent weeks, which is much better than we were at Bolton.

“I am sure there will be lots of twists and turns. It is probably easy for people to say before the fixtures what they think the results are going to be but there is always one that goes against it. I don't think anyone would expect Wigan to win at Anfield but they did.

“There are going to be many different twists and turns but we just have to try, as we have done, to have consistency and confidence and we have to put that back into the side because on Saturday we were below par.

“You just have to look after yourself. We have done very well of late, will put Saturday down as a bad day, possibly it was in the script for Bolton to try and win.”

Back to back victories against Wolves and Sunderland had moved Rovers six points clear of the drop zone and within touching distance of safety, until Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Bolton.

Wigan’s win at Anfield and QPR’s win at home to Liverpool a few days earlier surprised many as Kean stresses the importance of not relying on results elsewhere.

“I think we have missed an opportunity but there is no reason why we can't go on another run that we have done against some big teams at difficult grounds and managed to dig out points most times,” said Kean.

“I thought we were well below par but we will work on that. We always create chances and score goals. I think the occasion might have got to us a little bit on Saturday.

“It is tight. We weren’t getting carried away over the last few weeks when we have been getting results but we can take massive encouragement that over the last couple of months we have been picking up results at very difficult grounds against very difficult opponents and I'm sure we can do that again.”
