THE long-running Orphanage Cup will be played this year – but will kick off later than usual.
There was uncertainty about the competition going ahead as organisers waited to secure sponsorship.
But with Blackburn and Darwen Council again supporting the tournament, which was first played for in 1951, organisers are now hoping for a big turnout from works teams in Blackburn and the surrounding area.
The knockout competition, which would normally kick off this week, will now play its first round matches on Monday, April 16.
“We would normally have started by now but were waiting to secure a sponsorship for which I am very grateful to the council for providing.
“We don’t have much time now but I am hoping as many teams as possible will support us.”
Due to the late start of the competition, quarter final matches will be played on Pleckgate Playing Fields and Pleasington will be close inpreparation for the cricket season.
The semi finals will be played on May 9 and May 11 at a venue yet to be confirmed.
Teams are advised to enter as soon as possible as the AGM will take place on Thursday, April 5 where the first round draw will take place.
Again the venue for the AGM will be confirmed later this week.
