BLACKBURN Rovers midfielder Jason Lowe hopes his dream of representing Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics will be kept alive when the provisional squad is narrowed down in the near future.

Lowe received a letter in December informing him that he is under consideration for selection for Great Britain’s Olympic football squad and admits he would be delighted to get the chance to represent his country in London.

The 20-year-old has worked under Olympic boss Stuart Pearce in the England under 21 squad, where he is now a regular, and has also impressed with his performances in his breakthrough season for Rovers this term.

A total of 191 players were asked to make themselves available for the Olympics and Lowe is one of 184 who have confirmed their interest in being selected.

The numbers are due to be narrowed down before the end of the season before Pearce names his 18-man squad for the tournament during the summer.

Lowe must now wait to find out if he will be selected, although he insists he must first keep his focus on helping Rovers remain the Premier League – even if he will be suspended for their next two games after collecting his 10th booking of the season.

“The Olympics is at the back of my mind a little bit,” he said.

“I was included in the first list but it’s a long squad and I think it gets narrowed down some time in March and finalised in June.

“It would be nice to get the nod in there but I’m not thinking about that at the moment.

“I’ll take that as it comes and see what happens.

“It’s not what I’m concentrating at this moment in time.

“Playing well for Blackburn is all I’m bothered about.”

David Beckham is widely expected to captain the Great Britain side, with Ryan Giggs also among those on the provisional list, but 15 of the 18 players must be under the age of 23.

Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey are two of the many under 23 players under consideration but the FA have already indicated that anyone involved in England’s Euro 2012 squad will not be selected, seemingly suggesting that former Rovers defender Phil Jones is unlikely to feature in London.

The Olympic football tournament starts on July 26 with the final on August 11 – seven days before the start of the new domestic season.
