BURNLEY face a second-half challenge to continue their good away record against Southampton.
The south coast club have not won at home against the Clarets in 35 years.
But an early Adam Lallana header and an unfortunate Ben Mee own goal have given the second-placed side a headstart at St Mary's, where Southampton have not won since Boxing Day.
Burnley trailed in the eighth minute when Lallana headed in full back Frazer Richardson's right wing cross, and they found it difficult to settle into the game for a while afterwards.
Keith Treacy was on target with a firm left-foot strike midway through the half, but goalkeeper Kelvin Davis had it covered.
The Clarets thought they had Billy Sharp's threat covered in the 34th minute when Lallana picked out Saints' new striker.
But Mee mis-controlled the ball, catching out a wrong-footed Lee Grant, and keeper couldn't stop it from rolling over the line.
