ST Francis Primary School had to wait 36 years to win the Blackburn and Darwen Schools Jubilee Shield – now they may only have to wait one more year to add the county cup as well.

The skilful Saints travelled to Blackpool for the Lancashire finals with one of the youngest squads in the tournament – and seven of the 10 will be able to play next year. They were only denied a place in the final by the overall champions.

The team, a strong mix of Year 5 and 6 boys proved a stern test for Lancashire’s finest.

St Francis had a solid and strong spine with Nathan Shaw finding his shooting boots scoring from distance proving a threat from all over the pitch, Robert Marsh providing an uncomprom-ising presence at the back and Matty Holden assured and confident in goal.

The creativity in the team was provided by the tireless Aaron Treanor, matched by the tricky wing play of Charlie and Owen Ellwood both of whom added crucial goals.

Levi Walker providing pace and a superb anticipating at the back.

The Saints marched through their group to set up a quarter final clash with St Paul’s from Hoddlesden – a match settled by a wonderful volleyed goal by Cameron Austin.

But eventual champion St Andrews proved too be strong in the semi final as St Francis were beaten for the first time in over a year.
