JAY Rodriguez has insisted that Burnley are not too young to gain promotion this season after his fine solo goal rescued a point at home to Peterborough.

The forward made it five goals in his last five games with a stunning late strike but admitted there was disappointment at not being able to claim all three points as the Clarets could only draw 1-1 at Turf Moor.

Burnley dropped to 11th at the weekend but they remain within three points of the play-off spots, after taking 26 points from their last 12 matches, and Rodriguez retains the belief that Eddie Howe’s side can go up this season.

The Clarets have reduced the average age of their team this sea-son but 22-year-old Rodriguez has confidence in the squad to secure results, as he bids to reach the top flight after not making a single appearance during Burnley’s last Premier League campaign.

“We’ve got the belief, I don’t think it matters what age we are,” he insisted.

“We’re playing really well so I don’t think age is a factor.

“We’ve got a good mix, a good squad, a good belief in the team.

“We’ve got a great energy but I think we’ve got the same experience as well, the likes of Duffo (Michael Duff), Granty (Lee Grant), the whole squad, the staff are brilliant as well.

“It’s massive to get this club into the Premier League. It would be a great feeling to do it.

“I think every player in the dressing room and the staff wants that and we’re all working hard to do it, it’s something we believe we can do.

“This squad we’ve got is great and it’s shown with the results we’re getting.

“From the start of the season to now we’ve progressed massively.

“Of course I’d love to play in the Premier League with Burnley. It’s a great club.

“I missed out that year last time but I don’t look back. It’s just a case of looking to the next game, getting the points and hopefully getting into the play-offs.”

Burnley return to action at the weekend at second-placed Southampton, a club who tried to sign Rodriguez in August.

The 17-goal striker was also the subject of interest from Newcastle during the January transfer window but insists the speculation did not make it a difficult month for him.

“I don’t really look at anything,” he said.

“I just concentrate on my training and my own game, that’s all I can affect really.

“I’m really chuffed with how I’m scoring but I just want to keep scoring more goals.

“For the goal I just received it from Zav (Hines), took it towards the box and it opened up nicely and I just put it away.

“I’m not too far off 20 goals so I still want to hit 20 and, if I get there, progress and get even more.

“It was really cold, the weather made it really difficult but I thought the lads worked really hard.

“We were annoyed with ourselves for the slow start but we battled through and got something out of the game, so we’re pleased with that.

“With the chances we missed I thought it might be one of those days but we kept going, we got the point and we’re probably disappointed not to get the three points.

“We need to keep picking up points and moving up the table.

“Hopefully we can do it at Southampton. It will be a tough game but we have every confidence that we’ll go there and get something from the game.”
