It was fantastic to see all the goodwill messages sent to the club last week for Tom Bender.
The incident was horrific and thankfully Tom is on the mend.
It made me think about some of the comments heard from the terrace and, if I am being honest from me, when we bay for players to get ‘stuck in’.
We all like a tough-tackling player who stands for no nonsense and leaves his mark on an opposition player but when a freak accident like the one last Tuesday happens you realise what can happen when players clash.
With the Johnstone Paint’s Trophy tie now re-arranged for tonight and admission only £2 for adults and free for under 16s I hope we get a bumper crowd to cheer us into the next round.
The half-time team talk this Saturday at Plymouth certainly did the trick for the Reds, 2-0 down and with Sean Hessey sent off the game was definitely not going according to plan.
Stanley are made of stern stuff this season and we did enough in the second half to win the game but I guess we should not be too despondent with the draw.
It is a tad unfair to single out individual players for praise as it was a cracking team effort but it was great to see Kevin Long get his first Football League goal.
He is a colossus at the back and he keeps improving with each game.
If we can now use this as a springboard for the season and turn some of these away draws into victories then the future looks bright.
