THE last time Paul Gallagher started a game for Blackburn Rovers, they were dumping their old rivals Burnley out of the FA Cup.
But some 18 months on, the 22-year-old was thrust back into the starting line-up as Rovers embarked on their UEFA Cup campaign in Salzburg.
After impressing in pre-season, Gallagher has pushed his way back into the thoughts of manager Mark Hughes.
And the Scot admitted he was determined to stay there.
"I didn't find out I was playing until an hour and a half before kick off.
"Fortunately for me, Steven Reid picked up an injury and that gave me my chance. It's obviously been a long time, and I was quite nervous, but I enjoyed it.
"Obviously I wasn't up front, but I was just happy to be on the pitch and hopefully I've done myself justice.
"I've always been happy here. I knew I had to go out on loan to gain some experience, and I think I've done that.
"Hopefully the manager will give me more time on the pitch.
"Last season was good for me. I feel I did well for Stoke, and as for myself, I feel I learned more about the game and hopefully that will show up over the course of the season."
With an impressive showing against Salzburg under his belt, Gallagher is hopeful of keeping his place in the squad.
He added: "I hope I can keep my place. We've a good squad, with players who can play anywhere, but I hope I've done myself justice and I can keep playing on."
