ROVERS striker Benni McCarthy reckons his best is still to come after he helped the Blues to a 2-2 draw in Salzburg on Thursday night.

The South African marksman grabbed his second goal for his new club to put Rovers into the lead against the Austrians only for them to be pegged back with a late equaliser.

But McCarthy says Rovers fans haven't seen the best of him yet.

"I'm new at the club. I'm still adapting to the team, the other players and the system," he said. "I've two goals, and it's nothing to complain about, but for my standard I would love to have had maybe four.

"But it's still coming. It's early days and I'm starting to feel my way, communicating with and understanding my team-mates.

"That's what I'm hoping for and that's what I want. You push yourself harder.

"Obviously, if it was up to me I would love to score a hat-trick in every game, but unfortunately that's not possible.

"So you have to work hard, and any goal is appreciated.

"I've played at this level, and with this team we can achieve great things and they can turn me into a better player.

"That's what I want and that's why I came here. The coach (Mark Hughes) is brilliant. I've learned a lot from him and the rest of my team-mates.

"I just hope I can help them have a fantastic season as they did last season."

On the Salzburg game, McCarthy said the team were satisfied with their night's work but felt Rovers were worthy of the win.

He added: "We were trailing 1-0 and then we managed to score a brilliant free-kick, and we got back into the game.

"We've two away goals which is brilliant. We couldn't have asked for more, apart from holding onto the 2-1 lead.

"We just threw it away. But it was a decent performance and we are fairly happy.

"I feel we've enough about us to get through the home leg. When you play away a draw is as good as a win.

"It's an extra bonus if you score and we scored two goals, so we should be happy with our performance.

"Now it's down to us. The ball is in our court, and when the game comes we will pick up where we left off."

A former Champions League winner, McCarthy sets high standards and he's aiming high with his new club.

"In football anything is possible. I think we are capable of even top four," he said.

"Now we are gaining experience by playing in the UEFA Cup, and this season we are more optimistic.

"Next, we want to try and reach the Champions League."
