BURNLEY recovered from the shock of the imminent sale of Chris Eagles and Tyrone Mears to Bolton Wanderers by beating Torquay United in the last friendly of their south west tour.

The duo were left out of the game at Plainmoor after the club confirmed a joint offer in the region of £3million had been accepted and they would be allowed permission to speak to the Premier League club.

Their Clarets' team-mates immediately began the task of preparing for life without them with a comfortable win over League Two opposition, thanks to goals from Marvin Bartley, Jay Rodriguez and a third in four friendlies for young forward Alex MacDonald.

Bartley opened the scoring with his first goal in a Burnley shirt in the eighth minute, finished well at the end of a driving run from midfield.

Rodriguez made it 2-0 with an excellent low finish into the bottom left corner and that's how it stayed until the break despite further chances falling to Ross Wallace and Charlie Austin.

Torquay striker Rene Howe pulled a goal back just after the hour with a terrific long-range strike that crashed in off the underside of the bar.

But substitute MacDonald restored the two-goal cushion within minutes of his introduction.
