It was a case of déjà-vu at Colne Cricket Club when Chris Livesey and Dave Walker retained their crown in the Philip Wright Memorial Doubles Competition.

Sixteen pairs took part, starting in heavy rain but finishing in July sunshine. The quarter finals saw father and son duo of Kevin and Matt Bond beat Yorkshire’s Phil Dowgill and Greame Reay 21-17, while Malcolm Pounder and Chris Wilkinson accounted for Burnley’s Aaron Harrison and Brian Smith 21-18, but favourites Daryl Wright and Phil Wilkinson fell to Livesey and Walker.

Glyn Shuttleworth and Peter Stott were victorious over the Bury pairing of Paul Atherden and Lee Bleakley and in the semi finals, Shuttleworth and Stott beat the Bonds 21-11.

Pounder and Wilkinson, on Pounder’s 72nd birthday, had the upper hand and led 19-16. However, Livesey and Walker came through 21-19.

In the final, Livesey and Walker proved why they are worthy champions and built an unassailable lead, going on to win the match, and the tournament, 21-10.
