TWO schools from East Lancashire have served up a treat after winning county tennis titles.

Whalley Primary School from the Ribble Valley and St Cuthberts from Darwen could not be faulted at the Lancashire Youth Games finals.

Held at South Ribble Tennis Centre in Bamber Bridge, teams representing boroughs from across the county to battle it out for silverware.

St Cuthberts qualified for the Vase and lifted the trophy thanks to victories over Lancaster and Heysham and a draw against Pendle.

The winning team included Joshua Cosgrove, Katie Iglesias, Molly Moorhouse and Lewis Dutton.

“The children hadn’t really played much tennis before apart from PE lesson and break time,” said coach Gary Lloyd. “But this has really stirred up an interest and hopefully we will play more of it from now on.”

Pupils at Whalley had enjoyed more game time – with three of them playing for local clubs while the team gained some expert tuition from Mark Schofield.

And it showed in the Plate competition as Whalley beat representatives from Fylde, Chorley, Rossendale and Burnley.

The winning Whalley team included Dominic Brown, Christopher Matthews, Lia Hylands and Jessica Johnson. Coach Elaine Chambers said: “The team have trained very hard for this and it was great to see them win.

“The Mayor, Simon Hore was there to support us and he presented the team with the medals. “
