FOOTBALL fans will often ask: "Who ate all the pies?" And supporters at Burnley FC's Turf Moor ground are about to find out.

For the club is bringing in a new mascot alongside popular Bertie Bee - Stan the Van Man.

Two competition winners were invited to Turf Moor for an audition to become Burnley's newest on-pitch entertainer.

Now, following yesterday's auditions, Stan the Van Man is set to appear with Bertie in 11 fixtures at the ground.

The character has been created by Holland's Pies, which this season has become the official pie supplier at Turf Moor.

The two candidates for the role, Andy Brown and Kevin Day, were put through their paces to see if they had what it takes to become a mascot - and if they could run in the special suit!

Andy, 38, of Coal Clough Lane, Burnley, and Kevin, 50, from Cambridge, entered a competition run by the Lancashire Telegraph and Burnley's website to win a chance to be Bertie Bee's new friend.

The pair were shortlisted from 30 other entrants and competed in a blind pie-tasting challenge, donned the mascot outfit to see if they could manage in it and answered questions from a panel including Bertie Bee himself.

Andy has had experience as a mascot already - on occasions he has become Postman Pat for Royal Mail, where he works.

He said: "I have already been mascot Postman Pat. It's always been one of my ambitions to be on the pitch and this is one way I can live the dream if I can't play the game.

"I'm looking forward to the challenges they have set for us.

"Let the best man win, the best man will get the job."

Kevin came dressed for the occasion in his who ate all the pies t-shirt'.

The retired policeman became a Burnley fan as a child.

He said: "When I was learning to speak I saw Burnley on TV and started calling a football Burnley and I have been a fan ever since.

"I have bought my first season ticket this year.

"I'm moving up to the area and this is one way I can be on the pitch with the team.

"I'm looking forward to what they have in store for us.

"No-one can see you so you can be whoever you want to be, knowing that makes it easier if it is me who will be in front of all these people."

They will find out today who will get the job of entertaining the crowd and will first appear in Burnley's match with Colchester tomorrow.
