Clitheroe's John Lund had to be content with ninth place in the final of the BriSCA world F1 finals at Coventry.
Starting from the front row of the grid, the nine-times world champion was in contention for another title throughout the race, running as high as second overall.
But with five laps left he was delayed by a spinning backmarker, which dropped him down the field.
Despite suffering major brake problems throughout the race, Andy Smith broke his run of bad luck to take his second ever title.
