WILPSHIRE teenager Joey Lamb is bidding to continue his remarkable progress after taking part in the prestigious Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego, California.

The highly-promising 17-year-old is among East Lancashire’s top up-and-coming young golfers and a regular member of the Lancashire Boys team.

In May, Lamb was runner-up for the second year running at the Lancashire Boys Championship, pipped for the title at Bolton Old Links.

The former Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School student has enjoyed a fine summer, and this week took on the globe’s best young golfers across the Atlantic.

Founded in 1968, the Junior World Golf Championships are held annually at the world-famous Torrey Pines course in San Diego, venue for the Buick Invitational and 2008 US Open, which was the last Major tournament won by Tiger Woods.

Past boys’ champions have included Woods, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Corey Pavin and Nick Price.

Lamb booked his ticket to America after winning the Callaway Qualifier for Boys at the London Club in April this year.

Sadly, he couldn’t find his way among the leaders in California, rounds of 83 and 81 on Tuesday and Wednesday leaving him down the mammoth 210-strong field.

However, the scratch golfer will look to build on his strong 2011 season when returning to England.

Lamb is currently in the first 12 months of a two-year programme at the Cheshire-based Lee Westwood Golf School, where he became the strokeplay champion this year.

“Joey has played well in all of our events,” said Stuart Blair, coach at the Tarporley facility.

“He’s progressed so much in the time he’s been here, reducing his handicap from three to scratch.

“We’ve seen a big improvement in his swing and technique, he’s going to get better.

“He’s got a really good future.”
