TALENTED young boxer George Drinkwater will be looking to add the national title to his England crown when he competes in the Tri Nations finals next week.
The 14-year-old, who fights out of Roche Boxing Club in Burnley, travels down to Cardiff as English champion to take on his counterparts from Wales and Scotland.
The Unity College pupil goes to the Welsh capital in a rich vein of form, having won his last 16s fights – eight of them against area champions.
His most notably victory to date was beating Bill Beer from Repton ABC in a hard fought contest to win the Golden Gloves title.
“George is one of the best young fighers in the country right now,” said coach Brian Roche. “He’s going to the Tri Nations in fantastic form and we all wish him the best.”
Meanwhile, two other Roche Boxing Club fighters were in action last week.
Shane Smith, 16, from Rossendale beat Torquay’s Shane Smith at at show the Layton Institute, Blackpool.
And on the same show, Billy Grogan, 13, from Burnley made it five wins out of five with a classy performance to beat Liam Southwarm of Droylsden on points.
