Hyndburn hosted the latest event in the Lancashire Youth Games but the honours went to other areas of the county.
Teams representing 20 schools from across Lancashire took part in the county gymnastics finals which were held at Hyndburn Leisure Centre.
And despite a strong presence from schools representing local boroughs, it was their Fylde Coast and West Lancashire neighbours who took the glory.
Local schools have enjoyed their fair share of success in a wide range of sports but it wasn’t to be this time in the gymnastics.
Blackpool school, St Teresa’s Primary, took first place in the team prize with The Breck from the Wyre and St Peter’s from Heysham in second and third place respectively.
Six of the East Lancashire borough were represented by local schools.
They were: St Leonard’s Primary School (Burnley), St George’s CE (Chorley), Baxenden St John’s (Hyndburn), Primet Primary School (Pendle), Gisburn (Ribble Valley) and Haslingden Primary School (Rossendale).
Individually, Jordan Henderson from Rosewood and Lydia Stanworth of St John’s Cliviger represented Burnley while Robert Mason from Northern Primary School and Georgina Mullins from Thorn Primary School turned out for Rossendale.
All of the pupils who took part were given a motivational speech from double Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Craig Heap who also competed in the Olympics.
Heap, who comes from Burnley, described the benefits sport can bring to people’s lives.
The SPAR Lancashire Youth Games mascot, the Leaping Lancashire Lion also played a part in the day’s events.
And VIPs from across the county also attended the county finals to cheer on their local teams including represen-tatives from Lancashire Sport Partnership and the event sponsors, James Hall & Company Ltd, SPAR distributor for the North of England.
The tennis finals to be held at South Ribble Tennis Centre, Bamber Bridge on Wednesday, July 6 with the Disablity Youth Games to be held at Blackpool Sports Centre on Friday, July 8.
