ROBBIE Schofield made it a week to remember after following his brother to medal glory.
Just days after elder brother Jon – along with Liam Heath – defended his European 200m canoeing title, Robbie picked up an unexpected bronze medal in the Aviva English U23s Athletics Championships in Bedford.
Schofield, a former Clitheroe Royal Grammar School pupil, had only just returned to running after completing exams at Lough-borough University.
But he upset the odds to finish in third place with a time of 1min 49.21secs.
Muktar Mohammed of Sheffield took the title in 1.49.03 with Ben Wallis of Guildford second in 1.49.59.
“Robbie is currently studying physics at Loughborough University and had taken 18 months out of athletics to focus on his studies,” said dad Peter.
“He is just back running after his exams and he surprised everyone with how well he did.
“This was a great start to the season and we will see how he develops for the rest of the season.”
Now the former English junior champion has set his sights on qualifying for the World University Games in China in August.
“I have had a pretty bad time with injuries as well as having to sit exams,” said the 20-year-old. “So I was thrilled to get a medal this time.
“My aim now is do a fair bit of running and try and get the qualifying time for the World University Games.”
Despite coming third in the English Championships, Schofield, who is from Sawley, missed out on a place in the team for the European Championships.
“I got a good place but not a particularly good tme so it was not surprise I missed out on the Europeans.”
