CLITHEROE professional Ian Singleton and Hurst Green amateur Mark Young will today hope to clinch a coveted place in next month’s Open Championship.
The golfing duo are East Lancashire’s only representatives in local final qualifying in Kent, as they seek to make the prestigious event at Royal St George’s.
Singleton, 30, who qualified on his home soil last week in regional qualifying, will take to the Littlestone course, teeing off at 8.05am in his opening round, before his afternoon round at 1.35pm.
Young, a three-time Northern Order of Merit champion and former Lancashire amateur champion, bids for glory at Rye, with 8.15am and 1.45pm tee-times.
Also among the field at Rye is 1999 Ryder Cup player Jarmo Sandelin, while at Littlestone, the 2010 amateur champion, Jin Jeong, is hoping to make the grade.
Local qualifying is also at two other Kent courses, Prince’s and Royal Cinque Ports, with the top three golfers at each of the four venues qualifying for the Open from their 36 holes.
