SURREY opener and Burnley chairman Michael Brown captained his hometown club to only their second win of the Lancashire League season yesterday as they beat Bacup at Lanehead to move out of the bottom two.
Brown, who played in the team’s only other win of the campaign at Rishton, stepped in for unavailable skipper Steve Brunt.
He only made 14 with the bat before being bowled by Brett Pelser as Burnley posted 176-7 with Qasim Ali (29) top scoring.
Leyland pro Pelser, who was filling in for Bacup, then made 70 – but Burnley, with their other homecoming hero Bharat Tripathi acting as sub-pro, bowled the home side out for 121. Tripathi claimed 4-48, while Graham Lalor picked up 3-22.
Reigning champions Ramsbottom were made to work for their win at bottom club Rishton, who despite only managing 93 all out, threatened an upset.
Skipper Jimmy Bibby top scored for Rishton with 32 as Jon Fielding claimed 4-38 from his 20.1 overs.
Ramsbottom appeared to be coasting home as they reached 30-0 - but sub pro Chris Holt removed Jamie Pilling and then Ali Sartaj bowled Shanan Stewart for one.
David Bell (20) and Alex Bell (16) both seemed to be pushing Rammy to a win before falling to Sartaj and the former Clitheroe youngster then claimed a maiden Lancashire League collection when he had Rob Read stumped by Luke McVarish.
But Fielding made an unbeaten 15 and Rammy eased to their win.
Todmorden stayed on top of the table after a battling win over Rawtenstall.
Despite 42 from Simon Newbitt, 40 from Nick Barker and 34 from Qaiser Abbas, Tod’s innings never really took off with stand-in Rawtenstall skipper Keith Roscoe bowling unchanged to return 3-65, while Nilantha Cooray claimed 4-67 as the home side were bowled out for 159.
But Rawtenstall's reply stuttered and despite 30 from Jon Kerrigan they were 126 all out with Stevie Barker and Abbas both claiming four wickets.
Ashar Zaidi hit 62 and Graham Lloyd was 35 not out as Accrington racked up 221-9 against Colne at a sun-drenched Thorneyholme Road.
Colne sub-pro Dinuka Hettiarachchi, borrowed from St Annes, claimed 4-91 from his 25 overs – but Colne were up against it.
Their reply never got going and Hettiarachchi's 16 was the highest from a batsman with 20 extras leading the way. Colne were all out for 75 with Accrington skipper Jimmy Hayhurst claiming 5-32.
Nelson’s winning run was ended by Church as Saeed Anwar teed off at Seedhill.
He hit 107 as Church piled up 204 all out – but the measure of his domination of the bowling came as the next highest scorer was extras with 28 and Nas Hussain with 24.
Church bowler Andrew Bentley had reasons to celebrate.
.
Former captain Bentley claimed his 400th Lancashire League wicket in the match – and the victim was a special one for the bowler.
Bentley’s only victim of the day was former Church pro Luke Woodcock.
Anwar plundered four fours and eight sixes with six of his maximums soaring into Victoria Park and three not coming back.
Ex-Church pro Luke Woodcock suffered the most as his 12 overs went for 88.
Despite Peter Dibb (16), Woodcock (29) and David Crotty (33) getting starts, no-one went on to make the crucial score.
Skipper Tom Lord tried valiantly as he clattered a rapid 28 but his side fell to 169 all out with Mohammed Jamil claiming five wickets.
Lowerhouse stayed in second after a 40-run win over East Lancashire at a lively Liverpool Road. Jon Finch and Hassar Abbas both made 37 for the House – but the star was Ben Heap, who made 97.
He shared a 118-run stand for the second wicket with Abbas as 130 came in the final 15 overs.
His innings was ended as he was given out lbw to Ockert Erasmus. Lowerhouse got up to 230-5 thanks in part to 38 extras and Nick Turner suffered in the late onslaught as his eight overs went for 61.
John Turner (55) and Erasmus (50) batted well but in the end East Lancs closed on 190-5 with all the wickets falling to Francois Haasbroek.
Graham Knowles hit 84 as Haslingden's good season continued with a fine win over Enfield at Bentgate.
The skipper's knock helped his side up to 176 all out before Eddie Shah and Garry Sudworth claimed four wickets each as Enfield were 112 all out.
