SKIPPER John Cordingley is looking for double delight as Darwen face two big games in 24 hours this weekend.
Cordingley’s men lock horns with Leyland tonight in the Jamie Heywood Twenty20 competition knowing they will qualify for the showpiece finals day if they win and they then face a Northern League showdown with Carnforth tomorrow.
If the Towers can extend their run of three wins and a winning draw from the last four league games they can maintain the pressure on the sides above them as they aim to muscle in on the top five.
“We are on a good run and we are pushing hard for the top three or four,” said Cordingley. “There are teams up there that we would expect to finish above – but they keep on winning.
“It is a big game tomorrow and while it won’t be easy if you have ambitions to finish high in the table you have to be looking at beating teams like Carnforth when you are at home.
Tonight’s Twenty20 clash promises much excitement with Leyland making the trip to Birch Hall knowing they must win in order to keep their hopes alive, while Darwen are gunning for a place in finals day, which will take place at either Morecambe or Carnforth.
The Towers have won all five games so far – but Leyland can still pip them to the post if they win all their remaining games.
“It’s a long old road,” added Cordingley. “It seems a bit odd to have won all five matches so far and still not be through.
“But we know that Leyland and ourselves are the strongest teams in our group.
“We have a decent side out tonight and I think we will be alright – and all we want is the weather to be good and a decent crowd down at the ground.”
