REVENGE was sweet for Rishton U10s after winning the Langho Juniors football tournament.
After opening up the competition with a 2-0 defeat against Clitheroe Wolves Red, the two teams met again in the final – only this time Rishton went on to win in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
It was a fitting finale for Rishton who got better as the day wore on. But they could not have got off to a worse start and only the heroics of keeper Murray O’Rourke kept the score down.
But they began to turn things around in the second game and Sam Steer scored the all important goal in a 1-0 win over Egerton FC.
Rishton took that momentum in to their next game and the same result against Wilpshire Wanderers Red – Joel Bentley the scorer – meant they had to avoid defeat in their last group game to reach the semi finals.
And they did just that, battling out a 0-0 draw with Barrowford Celtic Orange.
They then produced their best display of the day with a 1-0 win over Mellor in the semi finals.
Arron Orr scored the decisive goal, rising to head home a Steer free kick from the edge of the area.
The final was a reunion with Wolves and both sides creating chances but the deadlock could not be broken.
However, Rishton took control of the shoot-out.
Steer and Corey Jenkinson converted their penalties while Wolves missed their first two.
Orr than blasted in his to make it 3-0 before hero keeper O’Rourke fittingly made the winning save.
