TODMORDEN hit the summit of the Lancashire League last night as they overcame the sternest of Sunday examinations to beat East Lancashire at Alexandra Meadows.
The Centre Vale outfit, who thrashed East Lancs on Saturday, were made to work much harder for their 12th win on the spin in all competitions – and they were indebted to skipper Andrew Sutcliffe to see them home as they chased the a 142 target despite a few wobbles along the way.
On a testing track East Lancs posted 141-9 from their 50 overs with Mark Lomas (36 not out) and John Turner (30) batting with maturity to test Todmorden.
Professional Qaiser Abbas bowled unchanged to return 7-64 in a glorious spell to make it 43 wickets for the season.
Tod were in trouble at 9-3 but Abbas then made 42 before falling victim to a controversial leg before decision off Paul Kelly to throw the game back into the mix.
Paul Senior hit a rapid 30 but Sutcliffe played a classy and sensible knock to take his side to within an ace of victory before he fell for 41.
But Tod got home with 22 balls and two wickets to space despite Ockert Erasmus claiming five wickets in front of his parents who have travelled from South Africa.
Accrington lost their lead after they went down to Enfield on the last ball of an enthralling Dill Hall Lane derby.
Accrington had posted 146-8 only for Enfield to squeeze home by two wickets with the final ball of the match.
Nelson’s remarkable run continued to 10 wins on the spin in all competitions as they thrashed derby rivals Colne at The Horsfield.
Batting first Colne were 168 all out with Luke Woodcock claiming 5-39 from 14.2 overs of spin to put a stranglehold on the home side despite 55 from Tayyib Jamil.
Nelson lost Peter Dibb cheaply - but Woodock made an unbeaten 80 to steer Tom Lord’s men to an eight-wicket win with 62 balls to spare.
Church piled on the pain for Rishton as they won back-to-back derbies.
Saturday ton hero Craig Fergusson could only manage 10 but pro Saeed Anwar hit 56 against his old club as Church closed on 183-6 from their 50 overs.
Rishton’s reply turned to disaster as their top four were back in the pavilion with just 11 on the board and only Scott Greaves (17) and Matt Lambert (10) could manage double figures as Andrew Bentley claimed 6-30 to bowl the visitors out for just 72.
Jon Fielding claimed another five wickets as Ramsbottom made it a maximum point weekend as they beat Bacup at Acre Bottom.
Fielding claimed 5-68 and pro Shanan Stewart picked up 4-42 as Bacup were 149 all out despite 28 from stand-in opener Andrew Spencer and the same score from Matt Thompson.
Rammy were 20-3 at one stage as they replied – but 66 not out from Alex Bell steered them home with more than eight overs in hand.
Francois Haasbroek hit 65 for Lowerhouse as they celebrated a derby double over Burnley at Turf Moor. The big South African helped the West Enders to 173-7 - and then Jon Finch made it a dozen wickets for the weekend as he claimed 5-17 from 11 overs as Burnley sunk to 75 all out and Lowerhouse went up to second.
Haslingden won a thriller against Rawtenstall at Bacup Road by eight runs as the Valley derby lived up to its hype.
Lee Ingham made 79 and number nine Jake Neary 34 as Haslingden posted 206-9 - and Rawtenstall’s reply ebbed and flowed but they were favourites to claim the win when Andrew Payne was at the crease.
However, batting with pro Nilantha Cooray as a runner, Payne was run out for 69 as the Sri Lankan failed to make his ground and Rocky fell those eight runs short with three balls left.
